Beginning in Fall 2006 and onward, Cline Library Course Reserves will deliver all Electronic Reserves (e-Reserves) readings through the VISTA class shells. Many instructors, working with Cline Library, create e-Reserves readings, such as articles and book chapters.
With the above information in mind, what are your options for adding your e-Reserves to your Bb Vista class?
Methods to Display e-Reserves
The best methods to use are the following:
- Folders – add a folder to your page and add all readings to that folder.
- Integrate readings into Learning Modules with course content – if already using Learning Modules for course content, add the readings to the appropriate modules.
Using Folders
If you are using your Bb Vista shell to enhance a face-to-face course, you may want to use Folders in Bb Vista to display the readings. You may also want to create a folder if you are placing individual readings in appropriate Learning Modules. This folder can be where all of your readings reside.
To set up a folder in your class
- Select the Build tab
- Decide where you are going to add your e-Reserves Folder. The Course Content Home page is a folder (you need to be in a folder to add a new folder). Let us assume that you are going to add your e-Reserves folder to the Course Content Home page.
- Select the Create Folder button:

- Type in a title for the Folder.

- Select the Save button
- Once created, open this empty Folder – you can now add the e-Reserves to this folder.
- Select Add File

- Select Browse for Files

- Open the Reserves Files folder (may also be called Reserves). If you do not see the folder, contact the Cline Library Course Reserves staff.

- Select all the files in the Reserves folder (can select all by checking the topmost checkbox in the header).

- Select the OK button
- The files are now in the folder you created!

- Use the ActionLinks for each file and select the Move arrows to move them.

Placing Readings in Learning Modules Along with Course Content
If you are using Learning Modules in an online course this is another method to set up your e-Reserves. If you have already added a Learning Module for each module or section of your course, you can add the specific e-Reserves for that module.
- Select the Build tab.
- Go to the Learning Module where you will add the e-Reserves. This example shows Unit 2: Planets.
- Select Add File

- Open the Reserves Files folder (may also be called Reserves).

- Select the specific e-Reserves in the Reserves folder for that module.

- Select the OK button.
- The e-Reserves are now added to the Learning Module
- To put them in a different order, select the file you want to move and then select the Move Selected Items Above icon at the location where you want to move your file.

In a Learning Module, students will see the Table of Contents. They may not know that the e-Reserves readings are in PDF format. Please let them know by naming the file to include “pdf” - ex: “Reading Title (pdf)”.
e-Reserves Format
Each e-Reserve will be a PDF (Portable Document Format). Using PDFs requires your students to have the Adobe Acrobat Reader. It is a good practice to let students know that files are PDFs and if they do not have the Reader to download it for free from the NAU Software Download site at: http://www.nau.edu/its/software/
Another good practice is to add “pdf” to the title name the links to the files.
